Shelley Elovitz is a member of the Workers’ Compensation/Social Security Department of Rothman Gordon. Practicing for fifty years, he has counseled clients in such areas as workers’ compensation, social security disability, long-term disability, and wrongful discharge. He is often called upon to present on individuals’ rights in Workers’ Compensation cases and how to protect one’s right to recover Workers’ Compensation benefits. A leader in the field, Shelley has been recognized by his peers in The Best Lawyers In America® since 1995, is rated AV® Preeminent™ by Martindale-Hubbell, and is named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer.

Shelley received his B.S. and J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association (Charter member of the Social Security Section and a member of the Workers’ Compensation Section) and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. Shelley is also a member of the American Arbitration Association Panel of Arbitrators, the American Association for Justice, the Pennsylvania Association for Justice, the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, and the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR).

What made you decide to practice law?
I decided to practice law because of my weekly visits with Perry Mason.

What types of matters you are most passionate about?
I am most passionate about making insurance companies treat my clients fairly.

What has been the key to your success?
The key to my success has been regular communication with and feed back from my clients while at the same time knowing how anxious they are about their case. Keeping them informed and giving them realistic expectations has resulted in referrals to me from clients that I have had as far back as 1973.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I most enjoy meeting/speaking with my clients and finding out how hard they worked to provide for their families. Also, I gain a great deal of knowledge by having them tell me how they do their jobs day in and day out.

Talk about a time you really went above and beyond for a client.
Early in my career, when I was doing criminal law, I persuaded a local magistrate to order a local police department to conduct a line-up in an effort to make sure that the identifying witness pointed out the correct individual who was accused of robbing a drive-in theatre. (Remember them?) And of course, when the witness identified someone else, the court reporter exclaimed, “Just like on Perry Mason!!” But again that was a long time ago, when I was a little more feisty…some say I have mellowed after being in practice for ½ century, let the reader decide!
