Samuel L. Douglass

Sam is currently focusing most of his practice on oil and gas developments in the Marcellus and Utica Shales while still involved with real estate, coal and other minerals. He is called upon by bar associations and other groups to speak on to the landowner's perspective on leasing, granting rights of way, and other matters related to the exciting shale developments. Sam prepared an article on advance minimum royalties, "Pay Me for Waiting!," published in the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Environmental & Energy Law Section Newsletter and is still called upon to speak on oil and gas issues.

A founder of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation, he served as the Foundation's first President from 1979 through 1981 and is currently a Trustee. In 1990, Sam was the recipient of the "Distinguished Service Award" at the Coal Lawyers Conference of the National Coal Association. He has been recognized in The Best Lawyers In America since 1987 for real estate, mineral law and natural resources law and has been recognized as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer. Sam is rated AV® Preemient™ by Martindale Hubbell. He maintains a continuing relationship with the developing Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, having served as a Board member for a number of years.

Sam joined the Real Estate department of Rothman Gordon as a partner in 2003 after 40 years with the firm Rose Schmidt Haley & DiSalle, P.C.

Sam graduated with a B.A. from Mount Union College and received his L.L.B. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1959, Sam is also a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association (Real Estate Section — Member of Council, Chairman 1983, Initiator and first editor of Section Newsletter and various other responsibilities). Sam served as Solicitor for The School District of the Township of Upper St. Clair for 28 years. He is active with Christ Methodist Church of Bethel Park and is past president of the Wesley Spectrum Services (formerly Wesley Institute).
